Wentworth Miller wants people who struggle with their sexuality to know it will get better and to always love themselves.
As Attitude magazine’s Man of the Year for their 2016 Awards Issue, the Prison Break star spoke to the mag about finding one’s place in the world. “I would say what others have said: it gets better one day, you’ll find your tribe. You just have to trust that people are out there waiting to love you and celebrate you for who you are.”
Miller added, “In the meantime, the reality is you might have to be your own tribe. You might have to be your own best friend. That’s not something they’re going to teach you in school. So start the work of loving yourself.”
The actor came out in August 2013 as he protested Russia’s anti-LGBT propaganda law.
He declined an invitation to appear at the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, and in his letter at the time, he wrote, “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”
He has also opened up about dealing with depression and suicidal urges.
Miller was presented with his Man of the Year award at a star-studded Attitude Awards ceremony in London on Wednesday (Oct. 12, 2016).
