The list of icons we lost in 2016 expanded this week when Carrie Fisher's fatal heart attack was followed by mother Debbie Reynolds' sudden death. Just one day after the Star Wars actress passed away, Reynolds tragically suffered a stroke—reportedly while planning her daughter's funeral. To make the unimaginable situation even more heartbreaking, Reynolds' last words were, "I miss her so much; I want to be with Carrie," as her son Todd Fisher later stated.
Within hours of the news that the silver-screen icon had left this world, countless fans took to social media to honor Reynolds. Many of them spanned generations—not a coincidence as Reynolds leaves behind an impressive body of work that spans from the 1930s to the present, including everything from the 1952 family favorite Singin' in the Rain to Will and Grace.
"Debbie went to be with Carrie," wrote her Will and Grace co-star Debra Messing in a tribute on Instagram. "Always worried about her. Carrie left too soon and now they are together again. My heart is literally broken. For 8 years she was my mom. She was pure energy & light when she came on stage. She was loving, and bawdy, and playful—a consummate pro—old school and yet had the work ethic and investment in her craft of a new fiery up and comer. She was always running off to Vegas or somewhere else 'on the road' to be a hoofer, to sing and dance and make people laugh. She performed 340 days out of the year. An inspiration on every level. A Legend of course, the epitome of clean cut American optimism, dancing with Gene Kelly as an equal, a warrior woman who never stopped working. A devoted mother and grandmother, and aunt and great aunt, and friend. I lost my mom a few years ago. She loved that Debbie was my TV mom. I hope they find each other and hug and kiss and my mom says, 'I got you, Debbie. Carrie's waiting for you.' RIP Bobbie Adler."
Messing's co-stars were quick to honor Reynolds as well.
It is beyond astonishing that both @carrieffisher & @DebbieReynolds1 have left this earth. I overwhelmingly adored & admired them both.

Reynolds also received plenty of love from TV stars that share screen time with her granddaughter Billie Lourd on Scream Queens. "There are no words," wrote Jamie Lee Curtis. "Just that we all want 2 surround Billie with loving strength & support. Please give her space media. Please. Please."
Likewise, Abigail Breslin and Ariana Grande, who played a brief role on Scream Queens,tweeted their support. "I love you Billie," Grande wrote. "So so much. Rest in peace, Debbie Reynolds."
Other celebrities, like Sarah Silverman and Mark Hamill, focused on all that 2016 has taken from us.
