In a skit on 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,' Foster played FBI student Clarice Starling, and Stephen Colbert played Hannibal Lecter, an "old friend of Trump's."
Robert Mueller has hit some roadblocks in his inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election in the past few weeks — but in a new clip on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, he got some help from Silence of the Lambs' ace FBI student Clarice Starling.
In a parody that aired on Friday's Late Show, Jodie Foster reprised her iconic detective role and questioned "Hannibal Lecter" (played by host Stephen Colbert) in a scene that mirrored her interviews with Lecter as played by Anthony Hopkins in the 1991 film.
In the clip, Lecter professed that he and Donald Trump were golf buddies once. "We ate our caddy," he said, "turned him into a taco bowl with a nice Diet Coke," referring to the recent New York Times report that Trump drinks 12 cans of the soda a day. (Colbert parodied the president's soda habits in an episode earlier this week.)
After Starling pressed Lecter repeatedly on his knowledge of his former buddy's ties to Russia, Lecter asked her what she knew.
Starling proceeded to give him an exhaustive list of reported Trump campaign contacts with the Kremlin — including the 12 indictments against former Trump campaign head Paul Manafort and Manafort's former business partner, Rick Gates, and former national security adviser Michael Flynn pleading guilty to lying to the FBI about his contact with a Kremlin representative.
One of Colbert's monologues on Friday's episode also mentioned an exhaustive account in the Washington Post, published Thursday, of Trump's denial of evidence that Russia interfered in the 2016 election since he became president.
"Wait, what, seriously, you have that already?" asked Lecter in the clip. "What do you need me for?"
Foster as Starling, not missing a beat, said to the criminal behind a plexiglass wall: "I want to come in there with you. It seems safer in there than it does out here."
