What you need to do when you drop your phone in the snow and you need to act quickly

Love it or loath it, most people have probably had to spend a bit of time in the snow over the last few days.
Whether it's building snowmen and having snowball fights, or walking to work while complaining about how everything falls apart as soon as it gets a bit cold, there's been no avoiding it.
But there's one thing you need to be extra careful with - your mobile phone.

It can meet an icy end if you drop it in the snow, but according to online smartphone retailer Mobiles.co.uk there are a few things you can do to try and save it.

Be quick

The longer your phone is submerged and wet the more likely you are to lose it forever.
Pick it up immediately, turn it off and take out the SIM card and battery (if it's a removable one). Wrap your phone up in something soft - kitchen roll is ideal but if not your gloves will do.

Dry the insides

Use a soft towel to gently sponge the water out. When you're doing this it's really important not to move or shake your phone as it could make the water go further in.

Remove any leftover water

If there's lots of water in your phone you can use the vacuum cleaner to get it our. Make sure you hold it at a reasonable distance.
But NEVER use a hairdryer - this will just blow the water inside even further.

Find some silica

You know those little packets of balls you get in deliveries? They're normally in new shoe boxes or tech equiment. Find some!

Silica gel can really save the day as it absorbs water. Put your phone in a sealed sandwich bag with as many of the little packets as you can find.
If you don't have any, you can use rice. Put your phone in a bowl of rice and rotate it every few hours. You'll need to do this for at least a day, but the longer you can leave it the better.

Wait

The worst thing that can happen to a water-damaged phone is that it short circuits, so it's really important not to switch it back on.
The longer you leave it the better.
