An interview between Bill Maher and Donald Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway turned tense on HBO’s Real Time when the host called out his guest for “enabling pure evil.”
It all began well enough with Maher complimenting Conway for reining in her candidate and for guesting on the show for years. Once they began discussing the issues, however, Maher slammed Trump for spreading lies and making false statements in the moment for political points.
“I don’t have time to go through all his lies,” he said, “we only have an hour.” But he did list off a number of falsities Trump floated, including comments on former Ku Klux Klan member David Duke, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and sending money to veterans.
While Conway jumped to her candidate’s defense, she later mentioned during comments against Hillary Clinton that she can’t support someone who lies for a living — and Maher called her out again. “You just said you can’t support someone who ‘lies for a living,’ when I read a list of provable lies,” he said, referencing Trump.
Conway maintained her composure throughout the interview, as she noted the campaign’s growing poll numbers. To that, Maher was brief: “Oh, I am getting nervous, but it’s not because Trump is good, it’s because people are stupid.”
