Lena Dunham Apologies For Making Awful Abortion Comment

On Tuesday evening, Lena Dunham took to Instagram to post an apology for controversial comments she recently made about abortion during her Women of the Hour podcast.

During an episode titled "Choice," Dunham—a staunch reproductive-rights advocate—discussed coming to terms with her own internalized stigma about abortion during a visit to a Texas Planned Parenthood, in which a woman asked her to share her own abortion story.
"I wanted to make it really clear to her that as much as I was going out and fighting for other women’s options, I myself had never had an abortion," Dunham said in the podcast. "And I realized then that even I was carrying within myself stigma around this issue. Even I, the woman who cares as much as anybody about a woman’s right to choose, felt it was important that people know that I was unblemished in this department."
She then said that this type of stigmatization is frequent among women and added, "Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had."
Her comments provoked the ire of many who felt she was trivializing abortion, and after an outpouring of criticism, Dunham posted a message apologizing for her statements.
“My latest podcast episode was meant to tell a multifaceted story about reproductive choice in America, to explain the many reasons women do or don’t choose to have children and what bodily autonomy really means,” Dunham wrote. “I’m so proud of the medley of voices in the episode. I truly hope a distasteful joke on my part won’t diminish the amazing work of all the women who participated.”
She continued, saying: "My words were spoken from a sort of 'delusional girl' persona I often inhabit, a girl who careens between wisdom and ignorance (that's what my TV show is too) and it didn't translate. That's my fault. I would never, ever intentionally trivialize the emotional and physical challenges of terminating a pregnancy. My only goal is to increase awareness and decrease stigma."

Lena Dunham Wishes She’d Had an Abortion

Lena Dunham stirred up controversy during a recent episode of her podcast by saying she wishes she’d had an abortion.

While hosting Women of the Hour, the Girls creator recalled a visit to a Texas Planned Parenthood years ago, during which a girl asked her to share her experience with abortion.
“I sort of jumped. ‘I haven’t had an abortion,’ I told her. I wanted to make it really clear to her that, as much as I was going out and fighting for other women’s options, I myself had never had an abortion,”recalled Dunham, 30.
“And I realized then that even I was carrying within myself stigma around this issue. Even I, the woman who cares as much as anybody about a woman’s right to choose, felt that it was important that people know that I was unblemished in this department.”

She commended her loved ones, who have had to have abortions, for their “bravery” and “self-knowledge,” adding that she has realized her need to put her own stigma surrounding the issue “in the garbage.”

She concluded, “Now I can say that I still haven’t had an abortion, but I wish I had.”
Listeners soon took to Twitter to accuse the actress of trivializing an “awful” procedure.

I can't even imagine how offensive Lena Dunham's comments are to women who actually had to go through abortions

To be such a talented woman of words and writing, Lena Dunham still manages to say all the wrong things

.@lenadunham FYI an abortion is not something you "get to have." It's an awful experience one SHOULDN'T wish for like a gift from Santa 😑🙄

Saying you wish you'd had an abortion is the stigmatizing action here @lenadunham Abortion is a HARD choice to make, not a trip to get froyo

I really regret wondering what Lena Dunham said/did now. The abortion rights movement did NOT need her to weigh in.

“I can’t even imagine how offensive Lena Dunham’s comments are to women who actually had to go through abortions,”  one Twitter user wrote.
Another person tweeted: “FYI an abortion is not something you ‘get to have.’ It’s an awful experience one SHOULDN’T wish for like a gift from Santa.”
This is not the first time Dunham has come under fire in recent months. She faced backlash in September for accusing NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. of ignoring her at the 2016 MET Gala because of her looks.

In an interview with Amy Schumer for her Lenny Letter newsletter, Dunham detailed an alleged incident in which the athlete allegedly “looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards.”

Nick Cannon Exposes Planned Parenthood Modern Day Evils

Nick Cannon spoke out against Planned Parenthood, saying the reproductive health organization promotes "population control."

When approached by Splash News to comment on his anti-Planned Parenthood remarks from last week, Cannon said the organization is participating in "modern day eugenics."

The "America's Got Talent" host tore into Planned Parenthood and its stance on abortion in an interview last week with "The Breakfast Club." He said Planned Parenthood is inflicting "real genocide" on the African American community.

"Hillary [Clinton] was sneaking and cheating," Cannon said in the radio interview. "Think about all the stuff they did with Planned Parenthood and all that type of stuff. That type of stuff is to take our community — and forget gentrification, it’s real genocide, and it’s been like that for years."
