WHY IS THERE WEIGHT INCREASE IN PEOPLE AFTER GETTING MARRIED? FIND OUT

The bliss of early marriage makes many people want to spend all their extra time with their new significant other. While that's certainly an enjoyable aspect of being a newlywed, many couples make eating a central part of the activities they enjoy together, and that can lead to unhealthy weight gain for the bride and groom. Luckily, you and your new spouse don't have to fall victim to marriage weight gain if you know the statistics and how to stay healthy.

Marriage Weight Gain Statistics

Couples who have been married for two years or longer are more likely to gain weight than their single counterparts, according to a 2012 study published in "Obesity." In fact, newly married women in their early 20s gain an average of 24 pounds in the first five years of marriage and men in the same age group gain an average of 30 pounds during that same time, according to "USA Today," referencing that same study. Interestingly, couples who were living together, but weren't married, didn't experience weight gain to the same degree.

Partners Can Influence Each Other

Married couples eat most of their meals together, so they're more likely to eat foods that they wouldn't normally eat because their spouse has a craving for them. In fact, partner influence over eating decisions is a large factor in weight gain after marriage. Two additional factors that might come into play are the tendency to eat out together more often and to cook bigger meals when eating at home. Increased time spent watching television together is another factor in post-marital weight gain, according to "Obesity."

The Pressure Is Off

The pressure tends to be off once a couple gets married. In other words, people who are dating are more likely to stay slender to keep the attention of their partner. Couples who are happy, satisfied and secure in their marriage are more likely to gain weight because they no longer feel any pressure to attract a mate, according to a 2013 article published in "Health Psychology."

Preventing Marriage Weight Gain

Married couples should consider their weight a factor in their overall health and well-being instead of just their appearance, the article in "Health Psychology" notes. Just as married couples can influence each other to eat poorly, they can also influence each other to make healthy choices. Work together to create nutritious menus, shop for healthy foods together and make meal preparation a joint effort because these can help you stay slim, as well as bond over a shared goal. To that same end, exercise as a couple, as well.

See Top Recommended Weight Loss Foods For A Better Healthier Eye Sight

Some foods get all the credit: bananas for their potassium, kale as the leanest green and carrots for their eye-boosting abilities.

But beyond the ever-extolled eye superfood, carrots, there are many diet-friendly foods that are an asset to your waistline and a wonder for keeping your eyes healthy. To help you eat your way to better vision — without living on rabbit food — we reached out to Chip Goehring, Board President of the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (AMDF). Goehring, who was diagnosed with macular degeneration and told he might go blind 22 years ago, can still see, read and drive — a result he credits to science-backed foods and supplements. Inspired to help others, Goehring and AMDF’s Director of Special Projects had the idea to create Eat Right For Your Sight based on 20 years of the foundation’s research.
Add these double-duty weight loss foods that also protect your peepers to your diet with tips from Goehring for how to enjoy them deliciously.
1
EDAMAME
best weight loss foods edamame
You’ll want to befriend this lean, green soybean stat. “Edamame is a complete protein that also contains omega-3 fatty acids, which support the healthy development of your brain, nerves and eyes,” says Goehring. And this mighty green bean is also a powerful weight loss ally. Upping your intake of plant foods like edamame decreases your risk of obesity, according to research. One of the most significant factors in the battle against the bulge is the fiber content of weight loss foods like soybeans. High fiber promotes feelings of fullness between meals, keeping you away from less healthy snacks, countless studies have shown. With 8 grams of fiber per cup, edamame is fiber-rich and calorie-low — a nutritional duo we can get behind. Goehring suggests sprinkling them in salads and using them in curries.

Tip

Try swapping out your fat-laden potato chips in favor of protein-packed dry-roasted edamame. It’s one of our favorite low-carb snacks and boasts an impressive 11 grams of protein per 100-calorie pack. Stash a couple at work to ward off the dreaded 3 pm slump.
2
OYSTERS
oysters for eye health
These slimy shellfish may not be proven to make you feel frisky, but science says they’ll help you build lean muscle and also protect your peepers. A 3-ounce serving clocks in under 90 calories and is a low-fat way to get a hearty dose of protein. Just one serving serves up 10 to 16 grams of the bicep-building nutrient. But that’s not all they have going for them. “In addition to being a great source of protein, oysters also have a lot of zinc. This mineral helps convert vitamin A, a vital nutrient for eye health, into a usable form and transport it through blood,” Goehring explains. “Recent studies also suggest that zinc can slow the progression of macular degeneration,” he adds.

Tip

“Fresh oysters simply grilled and topped with breadcrumbs and cheese are a treat for the palate and the eyes,” shares Goehring. For a more weight-loss friendly version of breadcrumbs, use whole-wheat bread, or swap the bread for walnuts. Simply place the desired amount of nuts in a ziploc bag and roll over with a rolling pin or pound down with a mallet until they reach desired consistency.
3
GRAPES
grapes best weight loss foods
“Grapes contain anthocyanin, a name used for certain purple, blue or red antioxidants that may help boost collagen structure in the retina,” says Goehring. This protects your eyes and may help guard you against macular degeneration. And those same anthocyanins that help protect your eyes will help you see some weight loss wins thanks to their ability to inhibit inflammatory chemicals. In fact, women who consumed the most berries, grapes and red wine had lower levels of inflammation and insulin resistance, two factors that help ward off diabetes, than those who consumed less, according to recent research in The Journal of Nutrition. Dark grapes, which boast high amounts of ellagic acid, are a particularly good choice as they can spike fat burning in your body.
 Tip
Eat as many (natural) red and purple foods as you can. Buy frozen berries or pop your grapes and berries in the freezer before eating. The healthy antioxidants that boost eye health are found mainly in the skins of these fruits, and subjecting them to lower temperatures changes the structure and makes the healthy compounds more available, researchers say.
4
BUTTERNUT
SQUASH
butternut squash for eye health
Your skinny jeans and baby blues will both be happy with this choice. “Butternut squash is rich in carotenoids, which are a vital nutrient for eye growth and development,” explains Goehring. And when you’re craving a starchy side, but working to meet your weight loss goals, butternut squash should be your go-to. It easily transforms into a silky side with more vitamins and minerals and far fewer calories than butter-laden mashed potatoes or fatty mac and cheese.

Tip

“One of my favorite ways to serve it is as a roasted squash hummus dressed up with cilantro, walnuts and pomegranate seeds. Serve the hummus with warm whole-wheat tortillas as a healthy snack or appetizer,” Goehring suggests. It's also perfect for comforting soups. When looking to lose weight, you may have blacklisted creamy soups from your kitchen, but pureed butternut squash proves a great swap for calorie- and fat-laden butter and cream. It won’t add any fat to the recipe, but it will lend the velvety texture you crave without the calorie overdose.

THIS 8 SIMPLE TIPS WILL MAKE YOU LOSE WEIGHT BY FORCE

You don't have to be the saint of healthy eating to slim down.
When I read the usual weight loss advice, I’m often reminded of my days in Catholic school. While I was taught the virtuous path by nuns, today’s diet gurus like to teach by none’s, as in “None of that fat. None of that wine. None of that relaxing and lounging around and enjoying yourself.” Can’t have none, won’t get none, and if you reach for a pat of butter, you’ll get a rap across the knuckles.
But before you sign on to any program that involves a lot of sacrifice and suffering, hold up a minute. I’m all for putting in the extra effort to lose an extra pound or two, but the reality is that making weight loss too onerous can easily backfire.

You don’t have to give up your fun and live like a monk in order to strip away flab and reveal a flat, toned belly. In fact, slipping a few vices in with your virtues might be the best way to speed up your weight loss.

1
POUR THE WINE

Temperance may make the Church Lady happy, but there’s ample evidence to suggest a glass of wine a few times a week could aid weight loss. Clink! The benefits come from chemicals found in grape skins. One compound, ellagic acid, has been shown to change the way “fat genes” express themselves, boosting the metabolism and slowing the growth of existing and new fat cells. More research suggests another healthy ingredient in wine—resveratrol—could help to counter some of the negative effects associated with lack of exercise, like muscle-loss and blood sugar sensitivities.
Sinful Tip: Although red wine has some great antioxidants, white wine's weight loss effects have been proven stronger. And wine’s not the only magic elixir out there

2
GET SOME SEXUAL HEALING

Running for miles may lead to a kind of exercise nirvana, but I recommend a more immediate path to heaven. Researchers say sex triggers the release of oxytocin, a hormone released during times of bonding that can minimize stress hormones and suppress the appetite. One recent study found daily injections of the “love hormone” could reduce belly fat and body weight.
Sinful Tip: You’ll also burn calories doing it. Recent study suggests that, in healthy people, “moderate intensity” sex burns an average of 4.2 calories a minute for men and 3.1 calories a minute for women—better than a walk, not quite as good as a jog, but far more enjoyable than either.

3
SLATHER ON THE FAT

Julia Child was right: Butter, and other high fat dairy products, are nothing to fear. In fact, real butter—particularly grass-fed—is an excellent source of fatty acids that can support weight loss. One acid, butyrate, which actually derives its name from the Greek word “butter,” can help dieters by improving the function of mitochondria—the “batteries” in your cells that essentially keep you young. Another fatty acid, conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA, is actually sold commercially as a fat-burning supplement.
Sinful Tip: Avoid lower-calorie margarines and butter “spreads” that are made of trans fat—they’ve been directly linked to weight gain and gut fat. And while you’re in the dairy aisle, make sure you choose the right choice !

4
SLURP YOUR PASTA

Strange but true: You can actually burn calories by eating pasta. The trick: you have to put it in the fridge first. The drop in temperature changes the nature of the carbs in the noodles into “resistant starch,” meaning your body has to work harder to digest it (the pasta “resists” being digested, get it?) Cold pasta is closer in structure to natural resistant starches like lentils, peas, beans and oatmeal, which pass through the small intestine intact, keeping you fuller for longer. One study found that including this kind of fiber can increase feelings of fullness by over 50 percent! And another study showed that resistant starches can even help the body burn body fat.
Sinful Tip: You’ve got to eat it cold: Once you heat the pasta up again, you destroy the resistant starch.

5
CHEAT

No, we’re not talking about your relationship or your taxes. But cheating on your diet could be the key to busting through a weight-loss plateau. In fact a recent study found overweight dieters who ate a large breakfast that included a dessert lost 15 pounds over the course of 16 weeks, while study participants who ate a small, no-dessert breakfast gained an average of 24 pounds over the same time frame. Researchers say that it wasn’t the morning dessert itself that made the difference; it was simply the fact that they gave the dieters permission to enjoy their favorite foods.
Sinful Tip: Want to get even more pleasure from a “non diet” treat? Make it yourself! People who are involved in the cooking process report foods to be tastier and more satisfying.

6
HIT THE SNOOZE BUTTON

Ever feel guilty because you took a nap? You weren’t being lazy—you were training! No matter how many calories you dodge, how many miles you log, or how many pounds you press, it won’t get you anywhere near your weight loss goals unless you’re also getting enough quality sleep. When you don’t get enough shut-eye, researchers say, you’re more likely to munch on junk food, especially at night. In fact, a recent study found when teenagers lost just one hour of sleep, they consumed, on average, an extra 200 calories—that’s nearly a half pound of weight gain per week if you make it a daily habit!
Sinful Tip: Besides getting your 8 hours a night, keep your sleep schedule regular. People who maintain an unvarying sleep routine have lower body fat levels than those who keep irregular sleep hours.

7
EAT MORE CHOCOLATE

U.C. San Diego researchers found that adults who regularly eat chocolate are actually thinner than those who ate chocolate less often, regardless of exercise or calorie intake (the chocolate fans actually took in more calories each day). Coincidentally, researchers say the belly-slimming properties of chocolate are actually unlocked in our gut, where good bacteria ferment cocoa into anti-inflammatory compounds that can “turn off" genes linked to obesity.
Sinful Tip: Look for dark chocolate with at least 74 percent cocoa solids.

8
SOAK UP THE SUN

Oh, were you not in the gym at lunch time? Thought you’d sneak out and lie on a park bench for an hour? You might have made the right weight-loss move. Sunshine slims us down by triggering our bodies to produce more vitamin D, the “the sunshine vitamin” that’s hard to get from food alone. In one study, overweight women who restored their vitamin D to healthy levels via supplementation lost 7 more pounds over the course of 12 months than women in a placebo group.
Sinful Tip: To maximize your benefits, soak up some rays before noon: A recent study found people who were exposed to just 20 minutes of bright light in the morning had significantly lower body mass index (BMI) than those who had most of their light exposure late in the day—regardless of how much they ate.
