When Helen Mirren was asked by Michael Parkinson if “her equipment” hindered her attempts to be seen as a “serious actress”, she wasn’t about to roll over and play nice.
Visibly annoyed, but still utterly elegant, she wanted to make certain Parky knew how silly he was being.
“I’d like you to explain what you mean by ‘my equipment.’” she asks him.
The cringing doesn’t stop there. When he explains he means her “physical attributes” she probes him further.
“My fingers?” She asks, evoking laughter from the audience and some serious squirming from Parkinson.
Finally they get to the crux of it: “Serious actresses can’t have big bosoms, is that what you mean,” asks Helen.
She then goes on to say, rather eloquently: “I would hope that the performance, the play and the living relationship between all the people on stage and in the audience overcome such boring questions.”
Quite.
