China is Building A Full-Size Titanic Replica and To Simulate The Iceberg Crash That Destroyed The Ship

Construction began on a full-size replica of the Titanic in Daying, China, on Wednesday, The Guardian reports. You remember the Titanic, right? Luxury Jack, Rose, doom, more than 1,500 deaths, etc.? There will be an iceberg crash simulation to recreate all of that.

The New Titanic, as it's called, will cost 1 billion yuan (about $145,242,230) and is being built in a totally landlocked county, about 745 miles from the nearest body of water. An audience including investors, contractors, designers, and press attended a “solemn ceremony” marking the beginning of construction.

According to the Washington Post, when the ship is done, it will echo the 1912 original almost completely, with a replica of the ship’s famous ballroom, theater, and pool, all of which tourists will be able to use. That said, this version (simulated above) will be more 21-century user-friendly with Wi-Fi and other unspecified modernities, one of the ship’s contractors told local paper Xinhua.

The attraction, which is set to open sometime toward the end of 2017, is being built with the help of British and American technicians. No further details have been given on the whole iceberg crash simulation thing other than that it will exist.

Great! Some pictures of the solemn ceremony and base of the ship below.
