HBO has given True Detective the green light for its third season starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, with a concept by series creator Nic Pizzolatto and Deadwood creator David Milch. While Pizzolatto will write the entire series, Milch did pitch in to write episode four and seems to have his little touches all over.
The third season takes the series away from the urban sprawl and repeated highway shots of California to return to the more rural part of the nation — and one that’s familiar to fans of Jason Bateman’s new Netflix series. Ali will play Wayne Hays, an Arkansas state police detective investigating some sort of horrible murder in the Ozarks according to Entertainment Weekly:
“The next installment of True Detective tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”
So much like season one, we’ll be jumping through time periods to piece whatever crime we come across together. You have to think the return to a more rural setting has a bit to do with the reaction to season two — something I enjoyed but plenty of people did not and didn’t hesitate to let you know about it. That said, season one was definitely high above and if the show can recapture that feel, it’ll be a step in the right direction.
Pizzolatto will also direct the next season, but he’ll be sharing duties with Green Room and Blue Ruin director Jeremy Saulnier. If you haven’t seen either film, drop everything and do yourself a favor. If his involvement means Macon Blair will be making an appearance in True Detective, it’s another reason to get excited. It’s also means we’ll see a more singular vision for the whole season, another return to season one and the work of director Cary Fukunaga. While it is Pizzolatto’s first time directing according to Entertainment Weekly, bringing Saulnier on-board is promising.
There is no premiere date for the series yet and HBO did not release an episode count, but you can officially start to get curious and figure out what type of horrifying crime will envelop the show when it returns.
