Police Arrest Man of interest Connected To explosive device left at N.C. airport


Police in North Carolina and the FBI have detained the person of interest in connection with an explosive device that was left at the Asheville Regional Airport.

Authorities said Michael Christopher Estes, 46, was captured by officers without incident Saturday morning.

A release from police said the hazardous device team responded at about 6:30 a.m. Friday to reports of a suspicious package. The release said “the explosive device was rendered safe by the hazardous device team and removed from the Asheville Regional Airport.”

FBI agents said passengers were evacuated for a short period of time out of an abundance of caution before the airport returned to full operation.

The FBI and police investigators have collected evidence from the scene and are working to determine the motive.

As the investigation continues it has been turned over to federal authorities.
