Johnny Depp Will Star in Dark Comedy 'King of the Jungle'
Glenn Ficarra and John Requa will direct the film about John McAfee, creator of the McAfee antivirus software.
Johnny Depp will star in King of the Jungle, a dark comedy based on the true story of John McAfee, creator of the McAfee antivirus software.
Glenn Ficarra and John Requa will direct from a script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. The project is an adaptation of a Wired article by Joshua Davis. The feature is from Condé Nast Entertainment, Zaftig Films, MadRiver Pictures and Epic Entertainment.
The article, John McAfee’s Last Stand, followed McAfee, who cashed in his fortune, left civilization and moved to the jungle in Belize. There, he set-up a Colonel Kurtz-like compound of guns, sex and madness. In the film, a Wired magazine investigator accepts what he thinks is a run-of-the-mill assignment to interview McAfee, but once he arrives in Belize, he finds himself pulled into McAfee’s escalating paranoia, slippery reality and murder.
The movie will be produced by Condé Nast’s Dawn Ostroff and Jeremy Steckler; Zaftig’s Charlie Gogolak, Ficarra and Requa; and Epic’s Joshua Davis. MadRiver’s Marc Butan and Epic’s Joshuah Bearman will executive produce.
IMR International is handling foreign sales at Cannes, with CAA repping domestic rights.
Depp will soon be seen in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and his other upcoming films include Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express, Miramax’s LAbyrinth and Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2. The actor is repped by CAA.
Alexander and Karaszewski are repped by CAA and attorney Christine Cuddy; Requa and Ficarra are with CAA and attorney Jeff Frankel; Condé Nast Entertainment is repped by CAA and attorney Ziffren Brittenham; and Davis is with UTA and attorney Linda Lichter.

Alec Baldwin has revealed how much he gets paid for his iconic Donald Trump impersonation on Saturday Night Live.💜
The 58-year-old actor told The New York Times that SNL shells out $1,400 every time he appears on the comedy show as the controversial president-elect.
Not only has his hilarious and accurate SNL impersonation become popular among Trump’s critics in the public, Baldwin has also drawn a reaction from the man himself.
According to Donald Trump, who isn’t one to mince insults, SNL is “totally biased, not funny and the Baldwin impersonation just can’t get any worse.” Baldwin took it in stride.
“Release your tax returns and I’ll stop,” he tweeted back.
Alec has found the key to a spot-on impersonation every time.
“I see a guy who seems to pause and dig for the more precise and better language he wants to use, and never finds it. It’s the same dish — it’s a grilled-cheese sandwich rhetorically over and over again,” Baldwin told The Hollywood Reporter.
Many did point out that his impersonation may have humanized Trump enough to help him win the election, and Baldwin does recognize that. However, he thinks that now is also the time to turn it up a notch.
“I think that now that he is the president, we have an obligation — as we would if it was him or her — to dial it up as much as we can,” he said.
Baldwin does plan to continue his Trump impersonation, although they’ll be more sporadic now that he has two upcoming films.

How do you spell “facepalm”? President-elect Donald Trump misspelled “unprecedented” as “unpresidented” in a tweet about China on Saturday, December 17, and the Internet won’t let him forget it.
“China steals United States Navy research drone in international waters — rips it out of water and takes it to China in unpresidented act,” the 70-year-old real estate mogul wrote. Later, he quietly corrected his misspelling, but not before Twitter users had a field day calling him out on his mistake.
(China’s Defense Ministry said in a statement Saturday that China is planning to return the underwater drone to the U.S. “through appropriate means” after it was discovered in international waters in the South China Sea on Thursday, according to The Associated Press.)
“Think about the Trumpian narcissicm loaded up in changing the word unprecedented to #unpresidented by accident,” one user wrote. Another shared the quote, “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.”
Saturday Night Live is a new one tonight. So, I fully expect Alec Baldwin to mock Trump in #unpresidented style.

During a campaign rally in South Carolina last winter, Trump famously told the crowd, “I know words, I have the best words. I have the best, but there is no better word than stupid.”
Beyond the misspelling, the former Apprentice host’s message was also cause for concern in light of his recent jabs at the nation, including his December 2 phone call to Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, which may have soured relationships with China.
The social media savvy politician has also recently slammed Vanity Fair after one of its writers wrote a scathing review of his Trump Grille, called Alec Baldwin’s portrayal of him on Saturday Night Live “unwatchable” and caused a buzz online after meeting with Kanye West at Trump Tower.
