'American Idol's' Katy Perry shows off wardrobe malfunction during show

Katy Perry's look of horror was quickly replaced by laughter as she realized she split her pants while filming a scene for "American Idol."

The pop star was sitting next to her fellow judges when she burst out laughing.

"I just split my pants," Perry announced before getting up and showing the audience her wardrobe malfunction, which was later covered up in editing using the show's logo.

Lionel Richie jumped up to try and help Perry but the singer was more interested in showing off her behind than covering it up.

Luke Bryan simply stayed seated as Richie jokingly said, "Save the children."

A crew member then helped Perry patch up her pants with some tape. Perry told her, "Tape my butt" before sitting back down.

Perry tweeted a clip of the incident on Monday.

Perry's wardrobe whoops wasn't enough to boost the show's ratings. Monday night's episode was an all-time low for the series only reaching 1.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.9 million viewers, according to Variety. NBC's "The Voice" reached 9.2 million in the same demographic.

It's not the first time Perry has shown too much on the show. She previously had a wardrobe malfunction during the "Idol" auditions, falling on the floor and showing too much. 

The 33-year-old has been the center of media attention over "Idol" antics.

She has been criticized for flirting with a slew of male contestants including tricking an unsuspecting male contestant into kissing her on the lips.

She also made headlines ahead of the show’s premiere for other reasons.

As previously reported, Perry is locked in an ongoing property battle against a nun. Perry is hoping to buy a sprawling eight-acre plot of land in California that was previously a convent. Last week, a nun appealed to Pope Francis in the battle against Perry.

The reason for the singers' dinner meeting is unknown, but the sighting is bound to stir up romance rumors nonetheless. Tesfaye is fresh off his breakup with Selena Gomez, who rekindled her romance with Justin Bieber shortly after the split.

The Weeknd has also reportedly reconnected with his ex, Bella Hadid, but they're not on romantic terms. Even though sources say they "still love" each other, the model is ultimately just hoping to be his friend for now. Tesfaye was also recently seen holding hands with Bieber's ex, Yovanna Ventura. Could Perry be his next love interest?

The Witness singer broke up with her famous boyfriend, Orlando Bloom, earlier this year after 10 months of dating. Their reps confirmed the couple was "taking respectful, loving space at this time," in a statement released in March.

It's also possible the two were just meeting to work on music together. Remember how Taylor Swift and Drake sparked dating rumors last year? It turned out the two were actually hitting the studio together and collaborating on some new music (which we've yet to hear). Perhaps Perry and Tesfaye are taking the same route.

Contrary to what some of her critics have claimed, Katy Perry didn't just sing about kissing girls for shock value or sex appeal. While accepting the National Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign at a gala in L.A. on Saturday, she talked about what it was like to grow up in a religious community while experiencing same-sex attraction.





"I speak my truths, and I paint my fantasies into these little bite-size pop songs. For instance, 'I kissed a girl and I liked it.' Truth be told, I did more than that," she said. When the song first came out in 2008, Perry said she hadn't actually "kissed a girl," but three years later she clarified that she had but didn't want to admit it—thanks to a couple of "'sleazy' male journalists" that made her feel uncomfortable.

She further explained her internal conflict about her sexuality in her acceptance speech Saturday evening, explaining that part of it was due to her ultra-religious upbringing. "How was I going to reconcile that with a gospel-singing girl raised in youth groups that were pro-conversion camps? What I did know was I was curious, and even then I knew sexuality wasn't as black and white as this [Rasario] dress. And honestly, I haven't always gotten it right, but in 2008, when that song came out, I knew that I started a conversation, and a lot of the world seemed curious enough to sing along, too."

When she says she's made mistakes before, she might be referring to the 2008 song "Ur So Gay," in which she criticizes a guy for his feminine qualities. Since then, she's made an effort to do better. In 2012, she told Parade Magazine that, "I came from a different mindset growing up, and my mind has changed. My viewpoint on all these things—equality for women, the choice to love anyone you want."

More recently, Perry has dedicated her "Firework" video to the It Gets Better project, which creates videos to give LGBT people hope for their futures; campaigned for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton; and spoken out in support of same-sex marriage.


At the gala, Perry said her time in the music industry helped her become more aware of LGBT issues—and to find a more accepting environment for herself. "[My work] introduced me to people outside my bubble, and my bubble started to burst," she said. "These people were nothing like I had been taught to fear. They were the most free, strong, kind, and inclusive people I have ever met."

“Rihanna wanted to get all the tea from Drake’s party and Katy was the one to give it to her,” an insider made it known. “She assured Rih that Drake was so not into Taylor and that Taylor didn’t even look that good, despite what the blogs and people were saying on social media.”


Katy Perry definitely seemed to have kept her eye on Taylor throughout the night, despite the fact that she avoided the “Bad Blood” singer by all means. The duo still hasn’t resolved their issues with one another, stemming from their 2014 feud over a group of backing dancers leaving Swift’s tour to join Katy Perry instead.

The source continues by adding that Perry didn’t find it hard to figure out where Taylor was at throughout the party because she always happened to stand out from the crowd with her odd dancing.

“Katy was laughing at Taylor and told Rih that [she] looked like a robot that was short of many fuses when she was dancing at the party,” the insider added. “They both got a huge chuckle out of that. Katy assured Rih that Tay Tay was not the life of the party.”

Rihanna more or less wanted to know what the situation was between Taylor Swift and Drake since it’s only been three weeks since she split from the rapper, so her phone call with Katy Perry seemed to assure her that she didn’t have to worry about Drake being linked to Swift.


Rihanna and Drake have shared their ups and downs in their eight-year on-again, off-again relationship, E! Online adds. The singer was alleged to have dumped Drizzy over fears that he didn’t want to commit himself to the relationship and start thinking about marriage and children.

Rihanna’s decision to dump him was more of her making it known that she’s not going to stay around if he doesn’t want to move forward with their romance, but there’s no denying that the “Pon De Replay” hitmaker still has feelings for Drake.

News of Katy Perry telling Rihanna not to worry about the rumors that are speculating on the internet comes just weeks after it was revealed that Perry is in the final stages of finishing her album. There’s even talks that she’ll address her feud with Swift in one of her forthcoming songs.

Lovato was just as open about other famous celebs. She spoke about coheadlining the Future Now tour with Nick Jonas and her recent split from Wilmer Valderrama. The exes announced in June that they decided to part ways after six years of dating.

In the name of democracy, any ‘just out of bed’ look is A-OK.”

Perry arrives at the polls and points out other voters’ perfectly acceptable outfits, including a girl in a child’s onesie, a "hunk in kids’ briefs” and a woman in "that free XL T-shirt you got from your bank.”

Since the “Roar” songstress sleeps in the nude, she shocks her fellow voters in the video by ripping off her sleepwear and attempting to cast her ballot in the buff. Two police officers rush to arrest her and throw a completely naked Perry in the back of a police car, where a naked Joel McHale commiserates about their similar situations.

“Scratch that. Gotta wear clothes,” Perry says. “My bad! See you at the polls November 8!”

The Grammy nominee has been a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton and even gave a speech and performance at the Democratic National Convention in July. “Both my parents are pastors and staunch Republicans.
