Olympian Gabby Douglas Is “Heartbroken” Due To Social Media Hate

Gabby Douglas is having a hard time shaking off the haters.
The two-time Olympian is dealing with social media criticism at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, something she’s never faced before.

"She's had to deal with people criticizing her hair, or people accusing her of bleaching her skin,” her mom Natalie Hawkins said to Reuters.
“They said she had breast enhancements, they said she wasn't smiling enough, she's unpatriotic. Then it went to not supporting your teammates. Now you're 'Crabby Gabby.'"
The 20-year-old recieved backlash after she didn’t place her hand over her heart during the Star-Spangled Banner when the Americans won the all-around finals.

"We grew up in the military community. My mom spent almost 30 years in the military, my dad's a two-time Vietnam vet,” her mom continued.
"Because of that, it was so insulting that they would accuse my daughter of being unpatriotic when we are so tied to the military family. When the Star-Spangled Banner is played, most military members either salute or stand to attention."
The 2012 all-around gold medalist also received attention for appearing to not be excited when teammates Simone Biles and Aly Raisman won gold and silver, respectively, during their individual all-around finals.
The 2016 Olympics in Rio are airing now until Sunday, August 21 on NBC.
