6 Things Your Favorite Emma Watson Does Giving Her The Killer Shape She Always Had

When Emma Watson decided to don Belle's iconic gold dress for March's live-action version of Beauty and the Beast, the role came with a bit of a change: This Disney princess wasn't going to be gasping for breath in corsets or riding horses in dainty ballet slippers. She'd be a woman of action who goes after what she wants, be it her father's freedom or a romance with one seriously hairy (and brooding) prince.

Here's what she did to prepare for the high-energy role—and how she eats and exercises to keep up that same woman-on-a-mission role in real life.

1. SHE REDEFINED WHAT IT MEANS TO BE "THE BELLE OF THE BALL."

While some may dismiss Belle as delicate, Watson's portrayal sounds far from it. She specifically requested riding boots, instead of ballet flats, so her character could ride horses and run around the French countryside.

She also took her preparation for the film's iconic dance numbers seriously, as did everyone involved in the movie. The "Be Our Guest" sequence, for example, was filmed over the course of a month. "It was really just very technical, and because it was so technical, really sort of painstaking," Watson told Entertainment Weekly. "Yeah, it was tricky. But I think it looks spectacular, and it all paid off—so all worth it in the end!"

2. SHE STARTS THE DAY WITH PLENTY OF PROTEIN.

The star's a huge fan of Mexican food—particularly La Esquina in New York City—and at home, she makes her own Mex-inspired breakfast taco. "It's my special thing," she told said. "I make guacamole, salsa, and scrambled eggs, and then I cook the tortilla. It's pretty simple, really, but yummy."

3. SHE FOLLOWS THE THREE S'S.

Rather than logging hour after hour at the gym, Watson gets in 30-minute workouts when she works with fitness instructor Emily Drew. Drew's program focuses on three areas: stretching, strength, and stillness. Stretches help Watson's posture, keeping her looking long and lean, while the strength circuit combines leg, cardio, and ab exercises. (Drew credits stability ball exercises, like oblique rolls and ball passes, for the actress's flat abs.) During the stillness portion, Watson holds yoga poses and meditates.

4. SHE'S GOT A HANGOVER TRICK.

Watson's a fan of mojitos, and she knows what to do when you've had a few too many to drink: "An English breakfast—sausages, baked beans," she told a fan who asked for her hangover cure.

5. SHE BLENDS ACTIVITY WITH ACTIVISM.
Watson often goes on walks to stay in shape (though she admits it can feel "hopeless"), her most recent ones serve a dual purpose: helping her share books she loves. Watson's been tucking away tomes all over various cities as part of a Books On The Underground initiative, which encourages commuters to put down their phones and pick up a great read.

6. SHE TAKES THESE ON THE REGULAR.

The former Harry Potter star's big on taking Omega-3 supplements, which can reduce inflammation and risk of heart disease (in addition to keeping your mind sharp, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center). She's also into Vitamin C with rose hips. After all, you've got to keep your immune system strong when you're always on the go—and by the looks of her Beauty and the Beastpress tour schedule, she won't be slowing down any time soon.

Emma Watson Reveals Why She Is Strict On No-Selfie Policy With Fans

A selfie with Emma Watson is worth all the Galleons in Gringotts to a Muggle—but don’t bank on getting one anytime soon.

In an interview in the new issue of Vanity Fair, the actress explains that she has a strict no-selfie policy with fans, in an effort to create boundaries and a semblance of privacy for herself against the insane Potter fandom (present company included) that she was thrown into at the impressionable age of 11.

“I have met fans who have my face tattooed on their body," she explains. "I’ve met people who used the Harry Potter books to get through cancer. I don't know how to explain it, but the Harry Potter phenomenon steps into a different zone. It crosses into obsession. A big part of me coming to terms with it was accepting that this is not your average circumstances."

It got to a point where Watson didn't feel like herself anymore. "I'd walk down the red carpet and go into the bathroom. I had on so much makeup and these big, fluffy, full-on dresses. I’d put my hands on the sink and look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘Who is this?’ I didn’t connect with the person who was looking back at me, and that was a very unsettling feeling," she tells Vanity Fair. "I was finding this fame thing was getting to a point of no return."

So, one of the ways she dealt with the crippling anxieties caused by fame at a young age is by saying no to selfies.

“For me, it’s the difference between being able to have a life and not,” Watson says. “If someone takes a photograph of me and posts it, within two seconds they’ve created a marker of exactly where I am within 10 meters. They can see what I’m wearing and who I’m with. I just can’t give that tracking data.”

(Ironically, the actress also stars in the upcoming film The Circle, which is about an all-seeing and sinister social media company.)

But don’t fret, Potterheads—the 26-year-old isn’t averse to talking to fans. Instead of a selfie, she offers those who approach her something better than a picture: a conversation.

“I’ll say, ‘I will sit here and answer every single Harry Potter fandom question you have, but I just can’t do a picture,” she says. But Watson adds that, shockingly, many turn down her offer if it’s sans photo.

Watson’s selfie weakness though? Kids. (And this dad.)

“I have to carefully pick and choose my moment to interact,” she says. “When am I a celebrity sighting versus when am I going to make someone’s freakin’ week? Children I don’t say no to, for example.”

What a Gryffindor move...

Watson, who is currently promoting her role as Belle in Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, covers Vanity Fair’s new issue on stands starting March 7. Read her full interview on VanityFair.com now. Beauty and the Beast hits theaters on March 15.

How Much Is Emma Watson Being Paid for Beauty and the Beast?

Equal pay for equal work isn't exactly a tale as old as time in Hollywood, but things are looking up, at least for Emma Watson: It's been confirmed the actress stands to make bank for carrying the sure-to-be smash box-office hit Beauty in the Beast on her shoulders.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Watson is raking in $3 million upfront for her starring role as Belle in the live-action version of the 1991 animated classic, though she stands to make up to $15 million if the movie cleans up at the box office (which it likely will—the movie is projected to rake in somewhere between $120 million to $140 million in its first weekend alone). For Watson to receive the full amount, the movie would have to gross $759 million worldwide, about as much as the Angelina Jolie–led Maleficentdid. And while Disney isn't always known for shelling out big bucks for every potential A-list star—the studio reportedly refused to pay Will Smith $20 million for a role in Tim Burton's upcoming adaptation of Dumbo—the studio does when it makes sense, as Jolie famously commanded a whopping $20 million payday, in addition to profit participation for *Maleficent, THR* reports.

Watson, of course, is no stranger to cashing in on cult-favorite hits. For the Harry Potterfilms, our Hermione reportedly scored $60 million total. And it's no surprise that Beauty has proved to be such a big-ticket item, especially considering its beast of a marketing strategy. The movie has been channeled into themed products galore—some might say to the point of fatigue—such as makeup, nail polish, phone cases, a $280 Le Creuset soup pot covered in roses, and much more.

The issue of women getting paid what they're worth is more important than ever, considering how widespread the wage gap is between men and women in most industries, but especially in Hollywood. Watson, an outspoken feminist, has advocated in the past for equal pay, a topic stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Sharon Stone, Natalie Portman, Emmy Rossum, Jennifer Aniston, and Emma Stone have been rightfully vocal about, as well.

Emma Watson Addresses Why She Turned Down La La Land

A few weeks ago, everyone kicked off at Emma Watson because, according to reports, she had been kicked out of the starring role of La La Land (you know that film with Emma Stone in that won loads of awards) because she was too much of a "diva."

Part of the reason no one could stop talking about those reports? Because the news was so bloody shocking. How could Emma Watson - brilliant, feminist, intelligent Emma Watson - be a "diva"?

Aaaand it turns out that that the reports were unbelievable for a reason. Because they weren't actually true. Right then.

Emma Watson has now officially squashed any suggestions that she's impossible to work with, Revealing why she really decided against appearing in La La Land in an interview with Sirius XM's Town Hall on Friday.

GETTY

"It's one of these frustrating things where names get attached to projects very early on as a way to kind of build anticipation or excitement for something that's coming before anything is really actually agreed or set in stone," Emma said, explaining that when La La Land was mentioned to her, she was already signed on to do Beauty and the Beast.

And Beauty and the Beast required a lot of work on her end.

"It wasn't a movie I could just sort of step into," she explained. "I knew I had horse training, I knew I had dancing, I knew I had three months of singing ahead of me and I knew I had to be in London to really do that.

"This wasn't a movie I could just kind of parachute into. I knew I had to do the work, and I had to be where I had to be. So, you know, scheduling conflict-wise, it just didn't work out."

So no, Emma is not a diva. She just can't do two massive movies at once - especially if those two massive movies each involve months of singing and dancing lessons. Fair enough, really.

A Newspaper Reporter Chides Emma Watson's United Nations Speech in Absolute Mockery

Last week, Emma Watson gave a moving speech at the United Nations General Assembly that urged university administrators to make their campuses safer for women and minorities. Watson—who is both a UN Goodwill Ambassador and key figure in the HeForShe organization—addressed campus sexual assault head-on, saying that safety is a "right and not a privilege" for vulnerable students. It was one of the UNGA's most powerful moments and was applauded by feminists around the world.
But not everyone enjoyed it, as this sexist news brief by The Sun reporter Rod Liddle demonstrates. The Huffington Post's Louise Ridley tweeted a photo of Liddle's offensive article, which questions the legitimacy of Watson's job at the UN and makes reductive Harry Potter jokes. Read it for yourself, below.

Liddle's article grossly disrespects Watson, starting with the fact that he calls her "Hermione Granger" before her actual name. His assertion that Watson should've discussed magical Harry Potter tropes instead of "whining" about "leftie, PC crap" isbeyond offensive, both to her and victims of sexual assault . (Last time we checked, campus rape isn't just "leftie, PC crap," and it's disgusting that Liddle suggested that.)
But Watson really has the last laugh here. Her HeForShe campaign has led to more than 1 billion gender equality actions—more than enough juice to drown out Liddle's attempt at journalism.

Try harder next time, bro—or, better yet, don't try at all.

Emma Watson Tackles Gender Equality With A New Short Film

Contrary to what UK tabloids might think, Emma Watson has been doing a bang-up job in her role as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. It’s actually been a rather busy week for Watson in that regard. Not only did the Harry Potter actress deliver an important speech at the HeForShe IMPACT 10X10X10 University Parity Reporthighlighting subjects like on-campus sexual assault and gender equality, but she also found time to release a new short film showcasing the challenges women have overcome and still have to topple.

Marinated in the sounds of Sia‘s visceral “Chandelier,” the two-minute clip titled Hurdles features footage of the 1964 Olympics to illustrate the hurdles women have faced and continue to face in the pursuit of women’s rights. The de facto PSA presents an uplifting tone in the fight for gender equality, highlighting the progress and achievements that have already been made. After presenting the hurdles that have been cleared, the viewer is urged to continue the sprint towards improved conditions for women.
“There are many huge and high hurdles left to jump,” narrates a voice that’s presumably Watson’s. “The race is still on. Every day of every year of our lives, but we will cross the finishing line. No one can stop us.”

It’s certainly worthy of a watch and we have the Hurdles video located above for your viewing convenience.
