Three ways the series finale of 'House of Cards' could play out

The final season of Netflix's 'House of Cards' will premiere on November 2, bringing down the curtains on a show that helped put the network on the map as a genuine competitor in original programming. The series is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Dobbs, who served as an aide to then-British prime minister Margaret Thatcher and then condensed his experiences from within Westminister Abbey's halls into a trilogy of politically-charged thrillers that would prove an instant success.

At the time, industry bigwigs such as Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright signing on to star was unprecedented, especially considering how 'House of Cards' would be a web-only series but, in the end, it would prove to be a well-calculated move. Beau Willimon managed to adapt Dobbs' novels into crisp 13-episode seasons packed with twists and turns to put the Nürburgring to shame, and the drama would gain immense popularity amongst critics as well as audiences, who raved about its slick, engrossing nature and its cynical take on power and corruption.
In the five seasons since its first premiered all the way back in February 2013, surprises have been aplenty and entertainment has rarely been lacking. Just think back to the time you saw Frank ruthlessly and without second thought decide to ruin the life of Peter Russo (Corey Stoll) and then kill him. Or when he decided Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara) was no longer worth the trouble and pushed her in front of an oncoming train. Or the dozens of other times he's emphatically taken one of his peers down, only to then step on them as he relentlessly sought the presidency.
'House of Cards' wielded this darkened view of the American political landscape unabashedly through the characters of Frank and Claire Underwood, as well as the half-a-dozen or so other characters that would prove pivotal in its multitude of unfurling storylines. And it's exactly this smorgasbord of equally relevant characters that made each of its seasons so unpredictable, with every finale slapping you in the face with one or the other revelation that left you in stasis for an hour or so after you're done watching.
Wright was given the responsibility of helming the series finale, and she's promised audiences that it's going to "shock you beyond belief." You could have tried to predict any of the previous five finales, and the chances are that you would have failed. Miserably. Nevertheless, here are three ways how we believe 'House of Cards' will reach its conclusion:

Tom Hammerschmidt finally connects all the dots

Hammerschmidt has been on the Underwoods' tail for quite some time now (Source: IMDb)

As the no-nonsense, tough chief editor at The Washington Herald, Hammerschmidt (Boris McGiver) is one of the few ethically unambiguous characters on 'House of Cards.' His ability to resist outside pressure and narratives is matched only by his pursuit for the truth, and from the get-go, it's clear that no love is lost between him and the Underwoods. He opens his investigation into the death of Zoe Barnes and Peter Russo on request of former colleague Lucas Goodwin (Sebastian Arcelus), who had been falsely jailed over cyberterrorism charges, and quickly realizes that there may indeed be some truth to the story.
Despite discouragement, Hammerschmidt sticks to his guns and continues his search for both Rachel Posner (Rachel Brosnahan) and Roy Kapeniak, the proverbial silver bullets. Later, when Frank calls his story "ludicrous" and a "grand conspiracy theory" he manages to gather the support of former aides such as Remy Danton (Mahershala Ali) and Jackie Sharp (Molly Parker), as well as former president Garrett Walker (Michel Gill) to publish the bombshell article, though it would not have the desired effect.
From the trailer, it's apparent that Hammerschmidt has not given up on the story. The search for Rachel Posner continues, and if he manages to find that she lived under a different alias before her death and her connection to girlfriend Lisa Williams (Kate Lyn Shell), the Underwoods' carefully constructed web of lies will unravel, leaving Claire with no option but to resign or get impeached.

Doug Stamper changes his mind following Frank's death and testifies against Claire

While every other aspect of 'House of Cards' remains ambivalent, Doug's (Michael Kelly) loyalty to Frank remains steadfast. Introduced as Frank's closest aide, Doug is complicit in practically every one of the schemes Frank employs as he lies and cheats his way to the presidency. Doug is almost like an enforcer, or an attack dog if you will, who Frank sends to intimidate his targets or who gets the dirty work done with no fuss. There were no limits to how far he would go to prove his undying loyalty either, killing Rachel on orders from the president despite his own reservations and personal feelings.
Later, when the walls began closing in on the Underwoods and it becomes clear that Zoe Barnes' death will be traced back to them, Doug agrees to take the fall and "confesses" to the murder of the Washington Herald reporter. The deal was that when Claire is president, she would pardon both Doug and Frank, though as the ending of season five indicated, she had no such plans in mind.
Teasers for the sixth season show Doug admitted into a psychiatric facility and quite possibly holding a serious grudge against Claire. His distaste for the former First Lady and now-president was no secret in previous seasons and is only going to be exacerbated by her isolation of him from the administration. Chances are he'll turn sides and help Hammerschmidt locate the body of Rachel Posner, possibly taking down Claire in the process.

Claire is outsmarted by Bill and Annette Shepherd

The problem with both those previous predictions is that, to some extent, they are... predictable, and that just isn't 'House of Cards' style. Because Wright promised that the series finale would "shock you beyond belief," it seems unlikely that the conclusion could as straightforward as Doug or Hammerschmidt getting one over her. Instead, maybe it'll be Bill (Greg Kinnear) and Annette Shepherd (Diane Lane) who hammer in the final nail into Claire's coffin.
The two new faces for this final season, Bill and Annette, are the inheritors of an industrial conglomerate and members of a family with considerable influence over governance and politics. The trailers indicate that they are both on a collision course with Claire, and possibly the Raymond Tusks of this season. In every season prior, the Underwoods have managed to outsmart and outmaneuver their political allies via hook or crook (mostly crook). Their underhanded tactics and willingness to go above and beyond while shunning any semblance of morality or ethics has meant they have come out on top on each occasion, so wouldn't it be almost poetic to see Claire get taken down by those very same means?

The thought that the Underwoods could be bested has probably never crossed the audience's minds, and while Claire is just as cunning as her former partner, maybe his absence gives their rivals the opportunity to strike. When you think about, her downfall is the most "shock you beyond belief" moment the drama can produce. It is unlikely because, by doing so, they would be unwittingly admitting that Claire was inferior to Frank, but stranger things have happened on televison.

First look at 3 new Netflix holiday movies, including A Christmas Prince sequel

Hallmark and Lifetime aren’t the only networks in the Christmas TV movie business. Netflix, which first hung out its stocking last year, is upping its mistletoe-and-merriment quotient this year, and you can get a first look at its offerings below.

The streamer’s slate is highlighted with the sequel to last year’s buzzed-about A Christmas Prince. Airing Nov. 30, A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding takes place a year after Amber (Rose McIver) helped Prince Richard (Ben Lamb) take the crown, and the two are preparing for a Christmas wedding… but everything is thrown into the air when Amber questions whether she’s ready to play queen, and Richard must deal with a “political crisis that threatens to tarnish not only the holiday season, but the future of the kingdom.”

Netflix

That’s not the only royals-based holiday film Netflix is planning. Debuting Nov. 16, The Princess Switch features Vanessa Hudgens in not one but two roles: She plays Margaret, the Duchess of Montenaro, who magically swaps places with a commoner named Stacy (who happens to look just like her) a week before Christmas. Thanks to Santa’s helper, Margaret falls for Stacy’s co-worker (Sam Palladio), and Stacy finds love with Margaret’s fiancé, who is a prince.

On Nov. 2, the streamer will unveil The Holiday Calendar, which centers on a photographer (Kat Graham) who inherits an antique holiday advent calendar that appears to forecast the future. Bonus: Ron Cephas Jones costars, along with Quincy Brown and Ethan Peck.

Netflix

Last week, Netflix announced another Christmas movie, The Christmas Chronicles (Nov. 22), which stars Kurt Russell and is directed by Chris Columbus. Positioned more as a big-budget film, The Christmas Chronicles unspools the tale of Kate (Darby Camp) and her brother Teddy (Judah Lewis), who aim to capture Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) on camera, but their plan takes them on a wild journey when they sneak into his sleigh, causing an accident and jeopardizing Christmas.

10 Shows to Watch on Your Netflix if You Love True Life Crime

1. Cropsey

What starts as an investigation into an urban legend about a boogeyman turns into a stunning investigation of Andre Rand, a Staten Island man convicted of kidnapping children. The shaky camera (à la Blair Witch Project) will make you want to watch this in broad daylight.

2. Team Foxcatcher

This recently released Netflix original documentary takes yet another important look at the 1996 murder of Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz by John E. du Pont. The New York Times describes the doc as "straightforward" and "good" for "those who haven't already spent enough time with this strange, unsettling story."

3. Forensic Files

It's like CSI but real life. There are two collections currently streaming on Netflix and both have 40 episodes, so do take your time.

4. Tabloid

This 2010 documentary by Errol Morris centers on the most fascinating case of Joyce McKinney, who was accused of kidnapping and raping an American Mormon missionary in England in 1977. At the time, the scandal was famously known as the "Mormon sex in chains case" and "The Case of the Manacled Mormon." The doc looks at the media sensation that surrounded the story at the time.

5. The Central Park Five

Ken Burns and his daughter Sarah directed this 2012 documentary about the high-profile case of five black and Latino teens who were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in Central Park in the '80s and subsequently spent between six to 15 years in prison. The group would later sue New York State for racial discrimination, among other things.

6. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father

The backstory behind Zachary's Bill (Bill C-464), which has since improved Canada's bail laws and child care procedures, is a heartbreaking but important one. Kurt Kuenne made this documentary for his friend Andrew Bagby, who was murdered by his ex Shirley Jane Turner in 2001. Turner later gave birth to Bagby's son, Zachary, and after being released on bail and given custody of Zachary, killed the child in a murder suicide.

7. The Thin Blue Line

Errol Morris has made a lot of fantastic documentaries. This one about 36-year-old Randall Dale Adams, who was sentenced to death for a murder he did not commit, is one of them.

8. Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer

Nick Broomfield's documentary about Aileen Wuornos's declining mental state is a follow-up to his 1992 feature Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer (also streaming on Netflix). Wuornos, who killed seven men in Florida in the span of 10 years, is featured in an interview one day before her execution. This is the same Aileen Wuornos Charlize Theron portrayed in the 2003 film Monster, which earned the actress a Best Actress Academy Award.

9. Shenandoah

Or, what happens when four high school football stars from a coal mining town in Pennsylvania are charged with beating a Mexican immigrant to death and three officers attempt to cover up the crime.

10. The Imposter

The curious case of missing Texas boy Nicholas Barclay was made even more curious when French confidence trickster Frédéric Bourdin impersonated him in 1997. He even lived with the Barclay family for months and convinced officials in Spain and the U.S. that he had been kidnapped for sexual abuse. P.S. The whole part about Bourdin being much older than the missing boy was not a dead giveaway.

Netflix Is Finally Letting People Download Movies and TV Shows

The holidays are for family togetherness, eating tons of food, and binge-watching Netflix shows. (Or at least having their yule log playing constantly on the television.) Now, you can keep watching shows like The Crown, even on the bus ride to and from your parents' house. That's because Netflix is letting you download your favorite movies and TV shows so you can watch them when you have no signal.

The company made the announcement on Twitter Wednesday morning:
According to a company blog post, you can now go to the details page on a movie or show and click the download button, so you can watch it later. Some titles are already available for download, and more will become available later. Downloads are now available for all plans, for no extra cost, but only for phones and tablets on Android and iOS. Just make sure you have the most recent update on the Netflix app.

The feature is similar to what is already available for Amazon Prime members. If you're a Prime subscriber, you can use the Amazon Video app to download select videos and TV shows to your phone or tablet, sometimes for a limited time, so you can watch while you lack signal or simply don't want to rack up data charges. But the Netflix announcement changes the game when it comes to the site's original series and movie catalog.
The Netflix app now has an "Available for Download" section that can help you find stuff to pre-install for your next long trip or subway commute. Though Gilmore Girls is weirdly not on there, Black MirrorStranger Things, and Orange Is the New Black are there for you when you need an escape from family.

$60M Could Finds It Way Into Dave Chappelle's Pocket Due To Netflix deal

Sometimes taking a break is the best move for your future. Just ask Dave Chappelle, who is poised to make a multi-million dollar comeback more than 10 years after he ditched his show and got out of the limelight. The New York Post reports the comic could take home as much as $60 million in a new deal with Netflix that includes the release of three specials due out in 2017. "Dave was offered $20 million a special.

Netflix basically has a war chest for this kind of content," said a source. "Whether it's a loss or not, Dave Chappelle's specials will get a lot of press and bring in new subscribers." Two of the shows are based on material in Dave's "personal archive," according to the Post, while the third is expected to be produced by Netflix.
