Black employees at NBC 'appalled' that Megyn Kelly is now playing the #MeToo card to get $69m payout after racist comments

Multiple black colleagues of Megyn Kelly's at NBC have expressed their shock and anger over the news that the host is fighting to get a full payout of her contract after her shameless comments defending blackface earlier this week made her position at the network unviable.

Some of the employees said their feelings were "deeply hurt" or they were "appalled" at reports that Kelly might claim that her coverage of the #MeToo movement could have played a major role in her termination from the news station. On October 23, Kelly defended the use of blackface during a roundtable discussion which featured an all-white panel.
Not one of the other panel members spoke about how racist and hurtful the history of the practice was in the US. One NBC employee told the Daily Mail: "How dare she? Who the hell does she think she is? Her blackface comments were bad but falsely playing the #MeToo card is the worst form of white privilege I have ever seen." Another employee said: "She had no respect for the African American staff on her team and her apology was both fake and dismissive."

48 hours after Megyn Kelly appeared to defend the use of blackface, reports now suggest that the anchor may be out at NBC.

She apologized on-air the next day, but NBC colleagues had publicly criticized and distanced themselves from the remarks. @Jerickaduncan has the details

A source at the network told the Daily Mail that after a meeting took place with Kelly and her staff on October 24, many of the employees of color spoke out about their frustration and anger with the host to the human resources department. The insider said: "Lots of people were willing to give her a clean slate after the whole white Santa thing, but she showed her true colors this week."
The same insider also said that what Kelly is trying to do is not only hurtful to her black colleagues but also the men and women of the #MeToo movement.
The National Association of Black Journalists responded to Kelly's blackface comments in a statement that was issued on October 25. Sarah Glover, the president of the organization who is also an NBC employee, said: "Megyn Kelly's flip comments on blackface were inexcusable. It is imperative that media organizations work to maintain the trust of audiences. The media industry has the power to inform, and an awesome responsibility to dispel ignorance and not encourage it."
Kelly delivered a tearful apology live on October 24 morning which was followed by another roundtable discussion. The panel, this time around, featured an all-black panel who spoke in length about the history of blackface. The first NBC employee who spoke to the Daily Mail noted: "If she truly had remorse and felt like she was wrong she should take no money and go into hiding. But she’s greedy and entitled. What the hell does she have to fight for? She’s been fired for being racist on national television. She’s not coming back and she needs to accept that."

Megyn Kelly looks like a hostage instructed to read out an apology. It’s so obvious that she is genuinely afraid. We are in the age of Orwell’s 1984. Deep in the middle of the PC tyranny.

The second employee who spoke to the publication believes that Kelly's exit was a done deal long before the racist incident took place on October 23. The employee said: "We knew this was coming. It had been the talk of NBC for months that she’d use the gender card to protect herself. She knew she was failing so she needed a fail-safe plan - so pretending to be the #metoo champion who aggressively confronted the bad guys was all a ploy to ensure she was never fired."
The employee continued: "But her dark underbelly showed through and she did this to herself. Her passionate defense of Kavanaugh was the first stage of revealing her faux #metoo outrage as it reinforced what we all knew - the only woman she cared about was herself." The first employee also spoke about the Kavanaugh hearing and how the on-air talent started getting extremely uncomfortable around Kelly.
They said: "The only highlight of the Kavanaugh hearings was watching Chuck [Todd], Savannah [Guthrie], Lester [Holt]and Andrea [Mitchell's] body language every time Megyn opened her mouth to speak. If she wants Ronan [Farrow] in the room great, then NBC should have Al Sharpton handle the final negotiations with her."

Kelly is right now in the middle of getting her legal team ready for a battle with NBC and she has many supporters standing by her. Sources have told The Hollywood Reporter that the meeting between the two camps is said to take place on October 26. Multiple sources have already confirmed to Daily Mail that Kelly is out of the network already.
An NBC executive with inside knowledge said: "Megyn Kelly is done. She is not ever coming back. We are just working out timing of the announcement but mark my word – she is gone and will never be seen on NBC live again. Here’s the worst part – her deal is a non-break deal – so she walks away with all that money. It’s disgusting and heads should roll here because of it."

The Daily Beast obtained a transcript from a town hall held on October 24 in which Andy Lack, NBC News Chairman, did not mince words when speaking to Kelly. He said: "There is no other way to put this, but I condemn those remarks. There is no place on our air or in this workplace for them. Very unfortunate. The team did an excellent job covering it properly. I thought Craig [Melvin] and Al [Roker] brought a thoughtfulness and a context to it that was sorely missing, and they really did this company and our audience a real public service."

Megyn Kelly reportedly fired by NBC after blackface comment backlash hits home

Today show host Megyn Kelly has reportedly been fired by NBC following severe backlash over her controversial remarks about blackface during a segment earlier this week. According to the Daily Mail, executives at the network confirmed that Kelly is done and "is not ever coming back."

The Daily Mail claimed Kelly hired a lawyer that specializes in gender-bias contract cases. It also reported that Kelly will be paid out her entire contract of $69 million unless the network can prove she has violated a clause in her contract. The network had earlier announced Kelly's broadcast of the 'Today' show on Thursday and Friday will be replaced with pre-taped episodes after the host faced heavy criticism over her controversial remarks about racist Halloween costumes, particularly blackface.
An NBC spokesperson, while talking to PEOPLE, confirmed the news and said: "Given the circumstances, Megyn Kelly Today will be on tape the rest of the week." The news outlet initially cited a source as saying Kelly's departure from the show is expected by the end of the season in December.
Kelly issued an apology to her colleagues on Tuesday after she received backlash for defending racist Halloween gags. The journalist reportedly made the controversial remarks during a roundtable discussion on 'Megyn Kelly Today' about inappropriate Halloween costumes.

"I want to begin with two words, I'm sorry..The country feels so divided and I have no wish to add to that pain and offense. I believe this is a time for more understanding, more love, more sensitivity and honor..Thank you for listening and for helping me listen too." Megyn Kelly
Kelly, in an internal note, said: "One of the wonderful things about my job is that I get the chance to express and hear a lot of opinions. Today is one of those days where listening carefully to other points of view, including from friends and colleagues, is leading me to rethink my own views." Kelly, later during the discussion also brought up The Real Housewives of New York's Luann de Lesseps who was criticized last year for dressing up as Diana Ross.
"There was a controversy on The Real Housewives of New York with Luann, and she dressed as Diana Ross, and she made her skin look darker than it really is and people said that that was racist," Kelly said. "And I don't know, I felt like who doesn't love Diana Ross? She wants to look like Diana Ross for one day. I don't know how, like, that got racist on Halloween."
Kelly, during the segment, had said when she was growing up, it was okay for white people to dress up as black characters. She also spoke out against last year's controversy over a reality star who had portrayed Ross.
"But what is racist?" Kelly asked. "Because you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface on Halloween, or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween. Back when I was a kid that was OK, as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character."
Netflix on Wednesday also confirmed that some of the cast members and executive producers from 'House of Cards' canceled their appearance scheduled on Kelly's show on Thursday.

Kelly's comments not only sparked a backlash from social media but also from her own colleagues at NBC. Craig Melvin condemned Kelly's remarks on-air and called her comments "indefensible” as well as “ignorant and racist,” while Al Roker said that she "owes a bigger apology to folks of color around the country."

MEGYN KELLY SEEKS $50M BUYOUT FROM NBC: REPORT

Megyn Kelly is about to get a serious payday from NBC to simply go away, according to a new report.

TMZ claimed on Oct. 25 that Megyn's deal with NBC is "firm" at three years and she's owed about $50 million (since she still has a year and 10 months left on her contract). Her attorney, TMZ said, is going to "demand the network pay her full remaining salary, or face a lawsuit."

A phone call between Megyn's team and NBC is set for Oct. 26.

Multiple outlets are claiming that NBC and Megyn are parting ways following her "blackface" comments earlier this week.

The controversial host's lawyer believes that his client was dealt a bad hand from the beginning, and was "targeted early on after she made critical remarks about Matt Lauer on her show after he was fired for sexual harassment."

Matt, to this day, is reportedly still well-liked at NBC. Recently, he even said he'd be back on TV.

The beginning of the end of Megyn's NBC tenure occurred on Oct. 23 when she received huge backlash for saying it was fair game to wear "blackface" for Halloween "as long as it's a character."

Many of her coworkers, Al Roker in particular, disagreed vehemently and didn't hide their feelings. Megyn's team will also "argue she was treated with gross unfairness," noting that she wasn't invited to respond to Al's takedown.

Still, fervor grew, and the day after her comments, Megyn issued a mea culpa, saying, she was sorry for the comments.

"The country feels so divided and I have no wish to add to that pain and offense. I believe this is a time for more understanding, more love, more sensitivity and honor. Thank you for listening and for helping me listen too," she said on on Oct. 24. "It is not okay for that to be part of any costume. Halloween or otherwise. I've never been a PC kind of person, but I do understand the value of being sensitive to our history. Particularly on race and ethnicity."

The apology was apparently not enough, and on Oct. 25, the Daily Mail reported that Megyn was out.

"Megyn Kelly is done. She is not ever coming back," an NBC source said. "We are just working out timing of the announcement but mark my word - she is gone and will never be seen on NBC live again."

Megyn Kelly’s Ratings Troubles Continue As Celebrity Publicists Are Reportedly Avoiding Her Show’s Hour

Despite booking an exclusive guest in Harvey Weinstein accuser Lauren Sivan and showing a side of herself that those familiar with her from Fox News would not be familiar with, Megyn Kelly’s ratings woes continued last week, which could lead to even more problems in the future.
According to Page Six, Kelly’s ratings dropped again last week to “a possible all-time low for Today” and may have been “lower than her [Fox News] cable show.” Reportedly, NBC News executives are distressed about Kelly’s spiral and are trying to right the ship, including putting her on MSNBC last week for a segment. “It’s not a good sign,” according to Page Six.

In news that could have further repercussions and definitely hurt the ratings, publicists are keeping their clients off Kelly’s portion of the show while still pursuing other hours of NBC’s morning show:
These publicists, however, said they are still eager to take their talent to other blocs of the morning show. “I’m not booking anyone on her show,” says a high-powered publicist, with a roster of big names, who asked for anonymity due to her overall relationship with “Today.” “I literally haven’t pitched anyone even from right out the gate. The buzz that is out there is so bad.”
Another well-known publicist, who represents one of the celebrities who has appeared on Kelly’s show, wasn’t pleased with the interview. “I won’t plan to have others go on,” the publicist said. “None specifically have been offered or asked to, but it’ll be my preference not to.”
The publicists that Variety spoke to also cited the polarization of the news media as a factor: Since Kelly came from Fox News, she is seen as an alienating presence. Others said they weren’t sold yet on Kelly’s interviewing style yet but would keep an open mind about the show for their clients.

Megyn Kelly Wants $20 Million Annual Salary To Remain With Fox News Or She Quit--Reports

Megyn Kelly reportedly wants Bill O’Reilly money to sign a new contract with the Fox News Channel.

The Kelly File star supposedly earns $15 million per year and is seeking an approximately $5 million bump in pay, at least according to a Wall Street Journal report about the contract negotiations.

After 12 years on FNC, the ex-corporate lawyer’s contract expires next summer, but CEO Rupert Murdoch has signaled that he is willing to move on if need be, the WSJ noted.

“Asked if Ms. Kelly would stay at the channel, Mr. Murdoch said in an interview that she is important to the network and he hopes to get a contract signed ‘very soon,’ but noted, ‘it’s up to her.’

“Mr. Murdoch said he is kept abreast of the talks ‘every minute of the day.’ While he doesn’t want to lose her, he said, ‘we have a deep bench of talent, many of whom would give their right arm for her spot.'”

A rumor floating around claims that FNC would give the 9 p.m. Eastern Monday-through-Friday time slot to feisty Judge Jeanine Pirro, the popular anchor of Justice with Judge Jeanine, but perhaps a more likely scenario is that Kimberly Guilfoyle, also a lawyer/prosecutor and the sassy co-host of The Five, would get the gig, if it ever comes to that.

Bill O’Reilly’s deal is also coming up for renewal, and Murdoch indicated he wants to keep The O’Reilly Factor host in the FNC fold as well. Both The Kelly File and The O’Reilly Factor are ratings powerhouses.

Immediately after the election, Megyn Kelly will embark on a book tour for her new memoir, Settle for Less, which is apparently expected to be a best-seller, although Kelly’s May prime-time Fox broadcast network special Megyn Kelly Presents — which included a then-fence-mending interview with Donald Trump following their feud — significantly underperformed in the ratings, if that’s any indication. She is also scheduled to co-host Live with Kelly! on November 9. Apparently, the book will contain a chapter about the Roger Ailes sexual harassment allegations.

“While few question Ms. Kelly’s interviewing skills, some wonder if her tough persona would translate to the softer touch associated with morning or afternoon television. Her attempt to do a Barbara Walters-type celebrity prime-time special earlier this year was a critical and ratings disappointment,” the WSJ recalled.

Megyn Kelly's contract negotiations spill into public view http://politi.co/2flulJs | AP
8:18 AM - 28 Oct 2016

On the subject of Trump, some believe that when Kelly accused Trump of misogyny in the first GOP presidential debate in August 2015, it was more about careerism and burnishing her credentials for CNN or another network than a legitimate journalistic inquiry. In the intervening months, The Kelly File has featured a lot of anti-Trump content, including the recent and highly publicized dustup with Newt Gingrich.

As always with these kinds of encounters, depending on one’s ideological perceptions, either Kelly schooled Gingrich or vice versa. Leaving politics aside, neither necessarily covered themselves in glory. To some, Gingrich appeared overly defensive while Kelly came across as too smug, which may explain the uptick on some nights in Trump cheerleader Sean Hannity’s ratings over The Kelly File. Hannity follows Kelly on FNC at 10 p.m. Eastern.

According to Variety, Megyn Kelly did not take offense to Rupert Murdoch’s remarks about the contract negotiations.

“Kelly was surprised by Murdoch’s comments to the Journal, which she read just before going on air to host Wednesday’s edition of The Kelly File, according to a person familiar with Kelly’s thinking. The anchor, this person said, was bemused that the Fox boss would publicly address a private negotiation, but she was not angered to the degree that his comments might influence her decision about whether to remain with Fox News…

“As for Kelly’s future at Fox News, her current contract runs through the middle of next year. At present, she’s in a window that allows her to engage with other prospective employers. Kelly’s representatives at CAA are in the midst of ‘due diligence’ to get a handle on what her options could be if she left Fox News, but are not expected to make a final decision for some time yet, given that she is working furiously as Election Day approaches, and then has a whirlwind of promotional duties for her book. Kelly, the person said, is generally happy with her role at Fox News but is also aiming to find a way to spend more time with her children. Moreover, she is realistic about the limits of being able to chart her own course at a rival news outlet or pull in the same salary elsewhere that Fox appears prepared to offer.”

Mark Levin: Megyn Kelly "auditioning" to leave Fox News http://hill.cm/vOvqIw2
12:16 AM - 29 Oct 2016

In the aftermath of the controversial Gingrich interview, conservative radio talk show host Mark Levin — ironically a former member of the #NeverTrump cohort — accused Megyn Kelly of being “out of control” and auditioning for CNN, Good Morning America, or the Todayshow. He also scolded her for alleged attention-seeking by going on The Howard Stern Show when her career was just getting started. Levin claimed that the Fox News Channel was “imploding,” in part because Murdoch’s two sons and heir apparents are politically liberal.

Murdoch insisted, however, that “were not changing direction…that would be business suicide.”
