‘Mobile Pot Shop’ parked near Utah County high schools raises eyebrows, gets the attention of police

An anti-Proposition 2 group's campaign in Utah County Tuesday led to complaints with police, because of how the group was spreading their message.
Down the sidewalk from Lone Peak High School in Highland in the morning, and down the street from Skyridge High School in Lehi in the afternoon, a U-Haul box truck sat covered in banners headlined with "Mobile Pot Shop."

"Let's get high," one banner read. "Free samples. Gummies, brownies, drinks, hash oil," stated the other banner. "No ID required, high school seniors over 18 with pain are welcome," it continued.
Inside, the group Truth About Prop 2, had set out literature with a message quite the opposite of those on the banners.
"We want people to vote 'no' on Proposition 2," chairman Ed Kennedy said.
A table set up inside the box truck displayed packaged items that Kennedy said would be available at dispensaries, should Prop 2 pass. He indicated that he strategically parked the truck 600 feet away from the school.
"What we are trying to get out, is to let families know how close a pot dispensary can be to a school," he said.
Kennedy said the signs on the outside were meant to add a "shock value."
"We just wanted to get their attention," he said. "That's what we were doing with this."
It definitely did raise eyebrows and grab attention, leading to complaints with police.
Lehi Police showed up at the truck near Skyridge High School. Officers talked to Kennedy to make sure no actual marijuana was being sold in the truck.
Lone Peak Police said their department received multiple complaints Tuesday morning while the truck sat parked near Lone Peak High School.
"People were upset that this truck was out there against Proposition 2," Detective Dave Ventrano said.
One of those phone calls came from the pro-Proposition 2 organization TRUCE.
Christine Stenquist, President and founder of TRUCE, said she called law enforcement after receiving a message from a follower who saw a photo of the truck on social media and requested that TRUCE take action.
She expressed concern over what was portrayed on the truck, and whether it lined up with what's actually in the initiative.
"Read the ballot initiative, that’s not what’s going on here," Stenquist said. "There are age requirements, there are limitations on advertising, there are zoning requirements."
Lone Peak Police sent out officers to speak with Kennedy.
"We paid them a visit, and they were not breaking any laws," Det. Ventrano explained. "They were exercising their First Amendment rights."
According to police, this 'mobile pot shop' is legal. Kennedy said he didn't plan on bringing the truck to any more schools, and indicated that this specific campaign would end after Tuesday.

police slap DUI charge on a Californian riding a horse on Los Angeles-area freeway

A man was arrested on a DUI charge early Saturday after he was spotted riding a horse along a busy Southern California freeway, officials said.
The California Highway Patrol's Santa Fe Springs district posted on Twitter that the pair were spotted on the eastbound 91 Freeway in Long Beach, located south of Los Angeles.

"We get a chuckle out of the interesting situations we encounter from time to time, but one thing the CHP does not do is 'horse' around with DUI," the patrol district wrote on Twitter.
Police posted photos of the man's arrest, with the horse keeping an eye on the situation.

No injuries were reported during the entire incident, and while it may make for a good joke the CHP said the arrest served as a reminder to not "put yourself, your beautiful animal, or others in danger of being killed in traffic."
"No, you may not ride your horse on the freeway, and certainly not while intoxicated," police said.
The horse was eventually released to the man's mother who came to the scene quickly after the arrest, according to KTLA.

NYPD Start Giving iPhone 7 and 7 Plus Handsets to Manhattan Officers, doing away with Windows Phones

The New York Police Department is making good on a promise made last year to dole out iPhone handsets to its officers, replacing around 36,000 Windows Phones as part of a new hardware upgrade strategy, reports the New York Daily News

The NYPD has been rolling out hundreds of the phones since Christmas to Manhattan cops, who can choose between iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models. The platform switch comes at no cost to the police department because the handsets are filed as upgrades under the agency's contract with AT&T.

"We've been giving out about 600 phones a day," said NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Information and Technology Jessica Tisch. "We're seeing a lot of excitement."

Police in the Bronx and Staten Island have already received their new phones, with officers in the Queens and Brooklyn boroughs next in line to make the switch to iOS.

Armed with Apple's smartphones, the NYPD has seen its response times to critical crimes in progress drop by 14 percent, according to Tisch. The iPhones also allow cops to get videos and surveillance pictures of wanted suspects within minutes of a crime.

"I truly feel like it's the ultimate tool to have as a patrol cop," said Police Officer Christopher Clampitt. "We get to the location a lot quicker," he said. "By the time the dispatcher puts out the job (on the radio) we're already there."
Before the rollout, NYPD's smartphones of choice were Nokia's Lumia 830 and Lumia 640 XL, released in October 2014 and March 2015 respectively. The discontinued devices run Windows Phone 8.1, which Microsoft ended support for in July 2017 to focus on its newer Windows 10 Mobile platform and cloud-based services.

In October 2014, New York City officials announced plans to roll out handheld devices to every NYPD officer for the first time ever, along with tablets for every patrol car. The $160 million initiative was part of a plan to bring the department into the 21st century.

Heroes Police help 85-yr-old wheelchair-bound veteran left shivering in front of steps

When NYPD officers spotted an 85-year-old man shivering outside the front steps of his Manhattan home in the middle of January, they immediately pulled over.
The elderly man told officers Vitaliy Zelikov and Georin Duran that a staff member for a medical transportation service carried him down the stairs when they picked him up for a doctor's appointment earlier in the day. But he had to take a taxi home by himself.
He asked the cab driver for help, but the man said, "That's not my job," and drove off.
"Once we knew he needed to get inside the house, you know, that was the only way we could get him up," Zelikov told Fox News. "We could carry him up safely, so we did."
The 85-year-old told the cops he was a Navy veteran who served during the Korean War. He reminisced about the "olden days" when he volunteered for the NYPD in the early 1980s.

"He was an absolute gentleman. A really nice guy. He lived in the community his whole life," Zelikov said. "The small talk really put a smile on his face."
Zelikov and Duran, who are both veterans themeselves, thanked the man for his service. They stayed with him for about 20 minutes to make sure he was safe and no longer in need of assistance.

"He was happy to have us there to help him up the stairs. But he really enjoyed the company as well -- as did we," Zelikov said.
Duran says their newfound friendship won't end there.
"I visited him yesterday," Duran told Fox News. "We'll definitely be seeing him."
In fact, the officers made arrangements to visit the man again on Wednesday. They've reached out to several companies that are going to take measurements of the man's building to estimate how much it would cost to build a wheelchair ramp or lift.
"If we can reach our goal, then we're going to build that ramp for him," Duran said, adding that he plans to create a fundraising page on GoFundMe when he has a better estimate of the cost. "We want to find some way to assist him in and out of his home with more ease."
Photos of the officers carrying the man received thousands of likes and hundreds of comments after they were posted to the NYPD's Facebook page on Saturday.
"Heroes helping heroes! The best of the best!" one Facebook user commented.
"Great job NYPD, above and beyond the call of duty," another wrote.
But the officers said they were just doing their jobs.
"I wouldn’t call us heroes. That’s why we’re there -- to help people out no matter how minor," Zelikov said. "We saw somebody in need and we had to help him out."
Duran agreed, "It’s always good to see the police department shown in a positive way and sends a message that this is our primary purpose amongst many purposes. This is what we do to help the community -- to help the public."

Disgraced Pennsylvania police chief's wife finally addresses scandal

The wife of a disgraced Pennsylvania police chief has broken her silence after her husband was arrested on Friday for trying to solicit sex from an undercover officer posing as a 14-year-old girl, KDKA reports.
Leechburg Police Chief Michael Diebold made headlines earlier this year when he lost part of his left arm in a near-fatal fireworks accident. But after his story garnered him support from across the country, the hometown hero swiftly fell from grace.
The 40-year-old police chief was arrested on Friday and charged with unlawful contact with a minor and criminal attempt to commit involuntary deviate sexual intercourse after it was revealed he had sent an undercover agent posing as a 14-year-old girl multiple inappropriate photos and even tried to meet up with her in person.
Danielle Reinke Diebold, the former police chief's wife, sent a statement to KDKAon Sunday describing the impact her husband's alleged crime has had on her family.
“They say God will never give you more than you can handle, but he did this time.
I have never hurt so bad in all my life.
I don’t know how to pick up all these broken pieces and find a way to put them back together and go on with my life, but I have to try to find a way for my children. Our lives have been completely shattered.
I am broken, devastated, humiliated, and I was completely blindsided.
He was the first man ever in my life who never made me question, never gave me a gut feeling, never a bad instinct or sign and we were even in the process of planning to extend our family.
This is not who we knew. We knew a loving, caring father and husband and we are grieving the loss of that man.
On the other hand, we are dealing with the raw emotions of having someone you loved and admired be charged with committing a terrible crime.
I feel like they are two different people — but they are not.
I will never find the right words to say but I want to say I am truly so sorry to everyone out there including any minor that may have been involved, our community, family and friends.”
Diebold and his wife married in a televised ceremony in July 2017, less than a month after his life-changing accident, according to CNN. The pair had welcomed their infant son not long beforehand.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro slammed Diebold's actions as "particularly heinous" because he is a public official who is "sworn to serve and protect the community."
"We have a zero-tolerance policy for the sexual abuse of children and my office will prosecute any offender to the fullest extent of the law, no matter who they are," he added.
After he was arrested, Diebold allegedly told investigators that he was aware that sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old child was illegal and that his life was "totally over."
